The history of watches

Watches originated in the fifteenth century. Explorers needed the time to navigate at sea. At that time, you could determine latitude accurately using stars. However, a clock was needed for longitude. If the clock was one minute off, you were twenty-eight kilometres off. The watch originated from the need for accurate navigation. The so-called quadrans could be used to determine the time. This is a disk on which the time could be determined using protractors.

The first mechanical clocks worked with a pendulum. The first clock was created at the beginning of the sixteenth century. Peter Henlein made the first portable clock with a spring mechanism. This clock was improved by Jacob Zech and Gruet with their invention 'the fusee'. This was a mechanism that provided great resistance when the spring was tightly wound. Shortly after, the cogwheels were created. Finally, in the year 1762, the watch was developed to the point where it was accurate enough for navigation.

The watch as we know it

The wristwatch was invented at the end of the nineteenth century and was then seen as a ladies' ornament . During the First World War, watches really got a function and were worn by soldiers on their wrists. In this way, the time could be read more quickly.
